The annual selections are made using a rigorous multi-phased process that includes a statewide survey of lawyers, an independent research evaluation of candidates, and peer reviews by practice area.
Darryl S. Vereen presented to a national audience of transportation attorneys, professionals and insurers at the 2015 ALFA Transportation Seminar on "Stone Cold Locks – Ideas on Closing Arguments." Mr. Vereen argued a wrongful death fatality case to a live, mock jury in Nashville, Tennessee, which was videotaped for presentation to the audience in San Diego, along with the jury's deliberations. Mr. Vereen then participated in a panel discussion about the trial, closing argument and the verdict to the national audience.
Anthony Safi presented a paper on current legal issues in home schooling laws at the University of Texas School of Law 30th Annual School Law Conference on February 20, 2015. Mr. Safi served as Chair of the Planning Committee and a Presiding Officer for the School Law Conference in 2013 and 2014, and served as Chair of the School Law Section of the Texas State Bar during 2012-13.
El Paso, Texas – January 8, 2015 Carl H. This award is bestowed from time to time to an El Paso ABOTA member for their dedication to professionalism, civility and ethics that exemplifies the character and commitment to the profession and administration of justice.
Steven L. Hughes, a state-wide recognized appellate lawyer, our former shareholder and friend, received one of the highest compliments when he was appointed to the Eighth Court of Appeals in El Paso by Governor Rick Perry on October 10, 2014. Steve is replacing Justice Guadalupe Rivera who recently retired. The firm has had the pleasure of working with Steve on legal matters and bring about optimal solutions for all the clients involved. David M. Mirazo, a Shareholder with the Firm, has been named to the 2014 Texas Rising Stars list of the state’s top young lawyers. Mr. Mirazo has made multiple appearances on the list, which recognizes the best attorneys in Texas age 40 or under. This year’s Texas Rising Stars list appears in the May 2014 issue of Texas Monthly magazine and Texas Rising Stars magazine. Each year, researchers with Thomson Reuters’ legal division solicit nominations from attorneys across Texas, asking them to identify the best practicing attorneys age 40 or younger, and those who have been practicing for 10 years or fewer. Fewer than 2.5 percent of all Texas lawyers earn the Texas Rising Stars distinction.
S. Anthony Safi was named as Outstanding Senior Lawyer of the Year by the El Paso Young Lawyers Association at the El Paso Bar Association's annual Law Day Banquet, on May 10, 2014.

Mr. Safi recently served as Presiding Officer of the 2013 Summer School Law Conference sponsored by the School Law Section of the State Bar of Texas, held in San Antonio, Texas on July 18-20, 2013. Mr. Safi also served as Chair of the School Law Section during the 2012-2013 State Bar year. Mr. Safi is the first El Paso attorney to serve as Chair of the School Law Section of the State Bar in over 30 years.
